Dave "Dazz" Danishefsky has been involved in local music longer than most people can remember. He most recently played with the band, Kartune, of which he was a member off and on for many years. Many people remember Dave as one of the founding members of Poptart Monkeys, and he was part of their rapid rise in popularity all over the East Coast. He is an excellent guitar player and talented songwriter. I remember the first time I saw Dave play in the beginning of the Poptart Monkey days. He looked the part of musician but could he play? Plus, given the band’s goofy name, it was hard to take him seriously. And then the band started and I was amazed. He was good, they were good! I had never before seen a local guitar player use a talk box (OK, maybe I was sheltered but I was impressed). As the time passed, I got to know Dave as a personal friend and I soon realized he was so much more than just a guy with a guitar. He is just one of those really great guys. Quiet until you know him a little bit. He very sincerely cared about not only his friends but his fans as well. Later on in the years, I realized that Dave is also a great father. He is "dad" to two beautiful children - Abbey and Aaron. He is doing everything he can to be a fantastic dad and be a part of his children’s lives and they truly adore their father.

Now the hard part. On March 14, I received a phone call and rapidly became terrified. Dave had been in a serious car accident early that morning. He was on I-81 near the Hazleton exit when he rolled his truck numerous times. He was flown by Life Flight helicopter to the trauma center at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Allentown, and had suffered serious injuries.

In the days since, he’s made progress but he still has a long road ahead of him. He has not left my thoughts for a single day since the accident.

Dave has many friends and I have received numerous calls to get updates on how he is doing. In addition, the music community has really pulled together in support of Dave’s recovery. So many people have asked me what they can do. Unfortunately, most of what can be done has to be done by Dave. His recovery is dependent on his strength and determination to get well and spend time with his family and friends again.

He is pretty tough - as those of you that know him already know. I have told anyone that has asked that the only real way to help Dave at this point is to support him financially while he is unable to do that himself. He has rapidly rising medical bills, his regular bills that haven’t gone away and the care of his two little ones. Dave’s friends and supporters are rising to the occasion. I have heard that many bands have put donation cans out at their shows. The wife of Chris Kurtz (PTM’s current guitar player) is currently selling shirts from her clothing line with the proceeds going to Dave.

Anything helps, any amount you can give. Dave’s family has set up a bank account for any donations. Please send checks or money orders to: Susquehanna Bank, 22 S. Church St., Hazleton 18201. They should be made payable to Susan Danishefsky, c/o David Danishefsky. Make sure you mark "account ending #9628" in the memo part. Dave and his family are very appreciative of everything that everybody is doing to help.

Save the date now - on May 18 at the Ramada Inn in Hazleton there will be a large benefit tentatively starting at 2 p.m. Ending time is unknown at this point. Many local bands are participating, including Kartune, Shoot the Moon (former PTM bassist James Balogach’s band), C-3, Flaxy Morgan and There & Back Again. More bands may be announced as time draws closer. All proceeds will go to Dave’s recovery fund. Unfortunately, we are short on details and need to meet the press deadline so we are providing as much as we can. You can stay up to date by keeping an eye on www.poptartmonkeys.com for the latest benefit information.

Rob Hampton - another former member of Poptart Monkeys - has brought the Web site back out of the archives in order to have a place for everyone to get the latest information.
